Pantry Organization

Today, we are talking pantries! As the kitchen is our daily go-to, our pantries need to be up to snuff so that our creative skills can be at their best. After all, breakfast, lunch, and dinner prep require certain items to be on hand at all times. From appliances to spices, we need to be able to grab and go! We are time-crunched enough, so let’s make our pantries a space that saves time and money, too, with better visibility of inventory.

As not all pantries are created equal (especially in NYC), storage can be quite the challenge. So many different sizes and shapes—built-in, free standing, pull out drawers, narrow deep shelves—present their own unique challenges. I have put together a list of tips for an aesthetically functional pantry and some of my favorite products to make it happen. Here we go:

TAKE INVENTORY

The first step in organizing any category is to discover what you own and take stock of your inventory. Not only will you see what you have, but you can assess what you need - very important to know the difference! Stage your editing process on a clear flat surface like your counters, kitchen table, or any other area right next to your kitchen. Empty out the entire contents and get started.

Start by checking expiration dates. Once you’ve weeded out the past-date goods, focus on trashing anything that is empty or goes unused. If you have any unopened goods, try to donate them to a local food bank.

CATEGORIZE

Like any other space, you must categorize. Put like items with like items: spices, cans, jars, pasta, cereals, snacks, etc. Then, assess the items you need handy in a pinch and put those front and center. If you start sorting by appearance, cooking might become a bit of a scavenger hunt not fun! So the first items you should set aside are things you use daily; these should go at the very front of the pantry at eye level.

As the Aesthetic Organizer, display plays a huge role in my projects. I always opt for smaller containers and bins for multi categories. For products you keep in bulk, like flour, rice, etc., look to store in clear containers that you can refill instead of keeping around the large packaging. For spices and grains, decant! Clear jars and containers look so lovely and you can see what you have!

Don’t overdo it on fancy storage solutions. Buy a few key products that will help your pantry function best and increase visibility. Here are a few suggestions:

LABEL LABEL LABEL

Label what you can. Any member of the family will understand what and where the items are in a cinch. And it will help you stay organized by having a clear visual reminder of what goes in each basket.

CREATE A SNACK BIN

This tip is super important for families.Having snacks in one, easy-to-reach area is convenient and keeps little hands from disrupting your organization. Place multiples of whatever they like in a bin or basket and place it on their level for grabbing on-the-go. This is great for adults, too, so that you don’t have to dig in your pantry every time you want a quick bite.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

If you have a nontraditional or nonexistent pantry, there are plenty options for you! One of my favorite products is the Elfa Mesh Storage Cabinet. The Container Store’s door rack is another affordable, easy-to-use option.

Find it here.

Once you’re finished, enjoy your new pantry. Keep it easy to maintain by disposing of all unnecessary packaging as you unpack your grocery bag. So, get cooking!
