Small Space Storage Solutions

While living in the Big Apple is an accomplishment in its own right, it is important to address that we all live in “precious space.” Even the most spacious of New York apartments can present challenges when it comes to storage and organization. Having an edited home and a minimal amount of clutter is trendier now than ever, but some items—like personal care items or shoes—are necessities and need a home within your home. Today, we are sharing some of our favorite small space solutions and a round-up of products that will help (and fit into your aesthetic).

Shelving Solutions

If you have little space for furniture with built-in storage and limited closet space, shelving is your friend. The right shelving in your closet is the key to storage that is efficient and functional. Shelving should maximize space and give your items room to breathe. I like to incorporate baskets and bins on shelves to keep items categorized and easy to find.

When we talk shelving, your mind might go to closets and pantries—and shelving is so important in those spaces—but it’s also useful in living spaces and bedrooms for items like books and keepsakes. I like to use gorgeous boxes and baskets to hold essentials like important documents, photos, electronic chargers, and handy things like batteries and matches.

For kids’ rooms and play areas, storing toys on shelves is a great way to keep them out of the floor when not in use. Small toys can be grouped together in tubs or fun storage cubes to keep shelves tidy.

If you browse Pinterest, there is no shortage of ideas for shelving in the kitchen. Floating shelves are the perfect way to introduce more storage and display your best settings and serving pieces.

If your bathroom doesn’t afford much storage, consider using the wall space to stock necessities like linens, toilet tissue, soaps, and guest toiletries.

Hanging Solutions

We are all familiar with the convenience of hanging storage. Most of us have closets full of hung clothes and maybe even a hanging rack for shoes. Hanging storage not only saves space and creates organization, but also makes items easily seen and accessible which is especially handy for clothing and shoes. For closets that don’t offer much in the way of shelving, we also love hanging storage with slots for sweaters and folded shirts.

Hanging storage isn’t just for closets, though. Try a hanging produce holder for the kitchen to reclaim some much-needed countertop space.

Floor Solutions

When shelving storage and hanging storage just won’t suffice, we head to the floor. The key to floor storage is to create organization that looks tidy and is easy to maintain. It also needs to be low profile and out of the way or it defeats the purpose of maximizing space.

In a closet, shoes are perfect for floor storage, but if you just toss them in, they will be a mess in no time. Try a two-tier shelve that will create a display for your favorite pairs. Storage boxes and cubes can also be placed on the floor to store accessories or out-of-season items.

In main living areas, large baskets are a great solution for throws or toys. In the bathroom, they beautifully store towels for your guests.
